2024 Anthem Blue Cross MediBlue Medicare Advantage Plans

Anthem Blue Cross (Anthem) offers MediBlue Medicare Advantage plans in California that combine your Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B) benefits and prescription drug coverage into one simple plan.

Learn more about Anthem Medicare Advantage plans, and find a plan in your area that offers prescription drug coverage.

How do Anthem Medicare Advantage plans cover prescription drugs?

Medicare Advantage is another term for Medicare Part C. Medicare Advantage plans cover everything found in Medicare Part A and Part B, and many plans also offer benefits not covered by Original Medicare. These benefits may include coverage for things like dental, vision hearing, prescription drugs and more.

Medicare Advantage plans can come in some of the same plan types that you may already be familiar with, such as HMO and PPO plans.

Anthem MediBlue HMO plans

Anthem MediBlue HMO (health maintenance organization) plans allow you to use a primary care physician (PCP) for your initial medical tests and treatments. If further care is needed, your PCP will coordinate with a team of health care providers within the Anthem network and issue referrals for specialist visits.

To get the best savings on your covered prescription drugs, you’ll typically need to visit a pharmacy that is part of the Anthem network.

Anthem MediBlue PPO plans

Anthem MediBlue PPO (preferred provider organization) plans may also use a primary care physician, but you aren’t typically required to go through your PCP in order to see specialists.

Anthem MediBlue PPO members may also be able to seek care outside of the Anthem network, though you typically pay lower out-of-pocket costs if you visit an in-network provider.

As with Anthem MediBlue HMO plans, you’ll typically need to visit a pharmacy that is part of the Anthem network in order to get the best savings on your covered prescription drugs.

What pharmacies accept Anthem Medicare Advantage plans?

There are thousands of pharmacies in the Anthem network. In most areas of the U.S., you typically won’t be far from a pharmacy where you can use your Anthem Medicare Advantage plan prescription drug coverage.

What prescription drugs do Anthem Medicare Advantage plans cover?

Anthem Medicare Advantage plans provide coverage for thousands of generic and brand name drugs.

Medicare Advantage plans that offer prescription drug coverage include a plan formulary, or list of drugs covered by the plan. The formulary will separate drugs into tiers, with common generic drugs making up the lowest and least expensive tier. Brand name drugs and specialty drugs are typically on the higher and more expensive tiers.

Some conditions may be treated by different drugs in different tiers. In this case, you and your doctor may exercise step therapy, in which you try a lesser expensive drug first and then “step up” to the more expensive drug if necessary.

Certain drugs may require prior authorization from your doctor, which means they will need to formally confirm that your plan will cover the drug before writing the prescription.
